Understanding Care Costs and Funding
Knowing what care will cost, and how to pay for it, is one of the first questions families ask. We believe in being open and clear. Here we explain what affects the cost of care at home and the funding options that may be available to you.
What Affects the Cost of Care?
Every care plan is different, so costs are worked out individually. The main factors are:
Type of care
Visiting care, live-in care, disability support or respite.Number of hours
How many visits or hours are needed each week.Time of day
Early mornings, evenings and nights may differ.Weekends and bank holidays
These may be charged at a different rate.Level of support
More complex needs may require additional skills or two carers.Length of arrangement
Short term respite compared with ongoing care.
Clear, Honest Pricing
After your care assessment, we give you a clear written quote that sets out exactly what is included. There are no hidden extras, and nothing is agreed until you are happy.
Ways to Fund Care at Home
Self funding
Paying for care privately from income, savings or other assets. Self funding gives you full choice over your care provider and arrangements.
Local authority funding
Your local council may contribute to care costs after a needs assessment and a financial assessment. Contact your council's adult social care team to request an assessment.
Direct payments and personal budgets
If the council assesses you as eligible, you may receive money as a direct payment to arrange care with a provider of your choice, such as Kisumen.
NHS Continuing Healthcare
People with significant ongoing health needs may be eligible for care fully funded by the NHS. Eligibility is decided by an NHS assessment.
Benefits that can help
Benefits such as Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payment are not means tested and can help towards the cost of care. Check eligibility on GOV.UK.
